Usually, it ends up going back into the kitchen, where the caterers chop it up and put it on plates - but there's a little more to it. Here are a few wedding cake traditions and practices for you to keep in mind. Usually, the entire cake is not eaten at the reception - given how big these things are, it would be quite a feat to make it through one of them! In fact, the top layer is usually removed, wrapped in plastic and given to the couple to freeze. It's traditional for the bride and groom to celebrate their first anniversary by sharing this part of the cake. If the cake has a frosting like buttercream, you'll want to remind the caterers to chill it for at least an hour before serving time so that it has time to harden. Whatever isn't expected to be eaten at the reception should be wrapped in plastic and kept in a box. Piece of cake!
